Am I right?
Well, I have to admit that is probably the furthest thing from my mind too especially since I live near Phoenix, Arizona located smack dab in the middle of the largest desert system in North America.
But, every year, starting in June and lasting until September, our favorite weather system known as the "Monsoon" returns.
In general, it just kicks up a lot of dust, known as "Haboobs", and gives us some the most incredible lightening shows you have ever seen.
As for the rain it is hit or miss.
Most of the time, the rain misses us.
When it does hit though, you better run for cover.
Phoenix can get some of the fastest and heaviest torrential downpours imaginable.
And since we live in the desert, the ground is hard and the water has nowhere to run off.
So, the water sits and it puddles everywhere……on the streets, in your yard and even on your patios and porches.
I am one of the fortunate 50% of Phoenix area homeowners to have a pool.
When I had the pool installed I went a little overboard with the “cool deck.”
Maybe, at the time I figured it was less grass I had to mow.
Anyway, the cool deck comes with the responsibility of some maintenance and upkeep too.
It is a harsh environment living in year-long baking sun constantly bombarded with pool water, chemicals and the dirt and debris kicked up by our monsoon storms.
Well, my cool deck is 8 years old now and was showing some real signs of age.
There were some minor cracks, some spalling in areas, the color had really faded and there were rust stains and surface damage from the patio furniture.
When my grandkids play in the pool and splash the water it just lays on the surface in puddles and seems to soak into the deck.
It was time for a face lift.
It was no easy task so I really wanted to find a solution to protect my investment, extend the life of the cool deck coating and get some real distance out of my hard work.
That’s why I turned to “Rainguard” a distinguished company that strictly manufactures waterproofing products for answers.
Having been in the paint and coatings industry my entire life* I knew Rainguard as a highly regarded company with wide array of products ranging from heavy industrial applications to their new homeowner friendly “Advanced Waterproofer Home Care Kit.”
This, as it turns out, was the perfect product to keep my cool deck looking new and fresh for many years.
The “Advanced Waterproofer Home Care Kit” gives the homeowner commercial grade protection using Rainguard's exclusive Micro-Lok™ technology which comes with a 10 year satisfaction guarantee.
The “Home Care Kit” includes a battery operated sprayer for quick and simple application - it's that easy!
Let me tell you, as a past professional painter and having seen a lot of products come and go during my time in the industry I was a little concerned that this product would perform as promised.
To be brutally honest, the battery operated gun pack looked a little chintzy.
I mean, I was ready to do a professional grade application here and I didn't want some plastic toy that was ineffective.
Putting it together was simple.
Everything fit tightly and the gun primed quickly.
I was ready to spray in under 5 minutes.
Although the batteries gave out after the first ten minutes (I replaced them with new batteries and the gun went the distance) the unit sprayed cleanly and the adjustable nozzle atomized the liquid perfectly.
The first thing I noticed was a there was absolutely no offensive odor.
Having been around my fair share of paints and coatings I have grown accustomed to harsh smelling products.
I applied the waterproofer to where it was just short of puddling on the surface.
In just over an hour I had covered approximately 1000 square feet of decking with just over 4 gallons of the Rainguard sealer.
Within a couple of hours (remember we are in Arizona) the sealer had completely soaked in and the surface was dry to walk on.
This morning I jumped out of bed and in the pool making sure to splash as much water as I could onto the deck.
I noticed the difference instantly.
Remember, before sealing with Rainguard, the splashed water would lie on the deck in puddles and pools and soak through the surface into the deck.
Now, the water beads up on the surface and flows to the strip drain channels in the deck where it is supposed to go.
It’s a wonderful sight and now I feel secure that my cool deck will perform and look brand new for many years.
You know what Baby Boomers, anything that works this well and is this easy to apply and makes my life simpler and better gets a "thumbs up" endorsement from me.
And did I mention they offer a 10 year satisfaction guarantee on their product?
I am ready to use Rainguard on several other projects around my house.
- unpainted exterior walls
- smaller projects like flowerpots or birdhouses
